Peter Hughes - Award Tutor In Film Technology
Award Tutor and Reader in Film Technology. Background in creative communication, advertising, professional photography, broadcast and independent television production. A qualified teacher and external examiner.
Worked in London advertising agencies as senior account executive in charge of leading clients - Guinness, Pfizer Pharmaceutical, Hot-Point and Atlas-Copco.
As a professional advertising and fashion photographer - work featured in Vogue, Country Life, fashion and lifestyle magazines and the national press. Covered Formula One Grand Prix for Car Magazine for several years.
Involved in independent and broadcast television for fifteen years - producing commercials, broadcast and corporate programming. Has directed and produced over 1,500 programmes.
Peter has been in charge of the Film Technology Awards at Staffordshire University since 2000.
Peter Rudge - Reader in Film Technology
After 15 years in the film industry in the USA and UK, Peter joined Staffordshire University in 2002.
He is a member of the British Kinomatograph, Sound and Television Society and the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, where he sits on the Learning and Events Committee, the New Technology Committee and the Council of the Academy.
With a background in screenwriting and producing, Peter has feature film projects currently in development with two Academy Award winning companies.
Outside of this work his main research interests are the new business models, metrics and analysis of digital media - specifically branded entertainment in film, TV and user generated content, viral and social networking environments.
Chris Priestman - Programme Manager for Media Arts and Design.
After 15 years working creatively with sound in live theatre and radio production, Chris has been teaching at Staffordshire University since 1998.
In recent years his research specialism is in the radio industry's adaptation to the increasing range of digital platforms, both globally and in the UK, on which he is a published author.
His experience practical of radio programme making includes work for the BBC, in productions from documentary to drama, commercial radio and community radio. He has been a concept consultant for a number of grass-roots radio station projects utilising conventional and Web-based distribution.
He is a member of the Radio Academy, the Radio Studies Network, the Community Media Association and the Broadcast Education Association.
Ray Johnson - Professor of Film Heritage
Ray is Professor of Film Heritage and Documentary at Staffordshire University, where he teaches Film, Television and Radio Studies. He is a Director of Screen West Midlands, a Director of the Media Archive for Central England and is a Fellow of the Film and Video Institute.
He is an independent documentary film-maker, actor and writer. His documentaries have been broadcast on most television channels and over 40 are available as DVDs. He has appeared as archive and film expert on such programmes as Flog It, Antiques Road Show and Made for the Masses. He is a Vice President of the Arnold Bennett Society along with Roy Hattersley and Margaret Drabble.
He founded and runs the Staffordshire Film Archive and has produced over 70 documentaries and compilations of archive films. Six video titles on the Titanic disaster released since 1991, Titanic; the Story (Carlton TV) and The Making of 'A Night to Remember' (BBC2) still available on DVD.
Film
Our staff work in all areas of film production - from scriptwriting and development through production crafts, directing and producing to post-production and CGI. Recent projects have included international release feature films and feature documentaries.
Television
Our staff are active in producing and developing programmes for all the major network broadcasters. Recent work has included commissions for Channel 4, Sky and The History Channel.
Journalism
Between them our journalism team offer many years of professional experience in national, regional and local print, television, radio and online journalism. Their backgrounds are with the BBC, ITV, Sky and major newspaper groups. Specialisms include news and sports reporting and documentary making as well as writing key text books for broadcast journalism and press.
Animation and Interactive Media
Animation today takes many forms, from comic, character-based stop-motion through mini 2D animations for mobile phones to sophisticated CGI and visual effects. Expertise covers the full range from concept and production problem solving to creative use of Maya and Boxx, motion capture and simulated environments and their integration into interactive multimedia applications and games.
Radio
Our team of radio experts combine a wealth of programme making experience for BBC national and local radio with detailed research into the current shape and future directions for the radio industry in a multimedia environment. We also have practical and research expertise in contemporary forms of audio production and transmission technologies.
